What Tree Is This? Winter Twigs as Clues.

An interactive computer key using winter twigs to identify tree genera of Illinois and the upper midwest.

Developed by
Ethel Stanley
(Millikin University) and
Dr. Joseph E. Armstrong
(Illinois State University) in collaboration with Dr. Dent Rhodes (Illinois State University). This program was supported by an 1994-95 Illinios Wildlife Fund grant.

Many of the illustrations are from "Forest Trees of Illinois" by Robert H. Mohlenbrock published by the Illinois Department of Conservation who gave us permission to use this resource. Miriam Wysong Meyer, Fredda J. Burton, and Mark Mohlenbrock were the original illustrators. Additional illustrations were provided by J. E. Armstrong and M. Stanley.

What Tree Is This? Winter Twigs As Clues

This program will teach you the features that can be observed on winter condition twigs and allow you to use leafless, winter-condition twigs to identify the genus of the tree they came from. The key uses only a limited amount of technical terminology, all highlighted and illustrated, accessible by clicking the mouse pointer on the term. The key features side-by-side illustrations and descriptions. You choose between two choices by clicking the mouse pointer on the picture that has the feature most like the twig you wish to identify. On each screen offers the option to backup.

OBTAINING THE TWIG KEY

The following are needed to obtain and run the key: TWIG.ZIP, ToolBook runtime files, several DLL files, and PKUNZIP to inflate the TWIG key program. It is legal to copy and download PKUNZIP and the TOOLBOOK runtime programs for individual, noncommercial use.

Download this file TWIGKEY.HTM using the "Save as" function to get a copy of the installation instructions.

These programs will require 3 3.5" diskettes, but it will be faster if you prepare a directory on your harddrive prior to downloading these files.

To access the directory that contains these files, use your mouse to highlight this file name (twigkey.htm) in the server/path/file address window. Hit BACKSPACE to erase, then hit enter to display the list of files in this directory. When you select a file, your browser should display an error message saying "Unknown File Type" (meaning it cannot be displayed). Select the "Save to disk" option. Indicate the disk and directory path where you want to place these files, then start the download with OK. Repeat for each file.

INSTALLING AND RUNNING THE TWIG KEY

What files are needed?

TWIG.ZIP : the program deflated to fit on disk

     PKUNZIP.EXE : inflates twig program

MTB30RUN. EXE : runs the Twig Key program
MTB30NET.EXE : needed when program is used

MTB30BMP.DLL : needed when program is used
MTB30CMP.DLL : needed when program is used
MTB30LNL.DLL : needed when program is used
MTB30MM.DLL : needed when program is used
MTB30UTL.DLL : needed when program is used
MTB30BAS.DLL : needed when program is used
MTB30MM.SBK : needed when program is used
Your computer should have WINDOWS and 4 MB of disk memory to store the program files.

How do I get started?

(1) Make backup copies of the TWIG.ZIP, PKUNZIP.EXE, and MTB*.* files. This will take 3 3.5" diskettes.

(2) Make a directory on your harddisk named MTB30. In Windows, under the FILE menu of the Program Manager you will find the "Create directory" function. In DOS, type "md mtb30" at the command prompt.

(3) In Windows, use the File Manager to move the eight MTB files (*.DLL and *.SBK) to the MTB30 directory. Highlight the file and use your mouse to drag to the new directory.

(4) Now to UNZIP the TWIG.KEY program, use the File Manager program to highlight the TWIG.ZIP file. Select RUN from the FILE menu. In the command menu that appears, position the cursor before TWIG.ZIP and type PKUNZIP (space), and then position the cursor after TWIG.ZIP and type (space) C:\MTB30. The command line should read: PKUNZIP TWIG.ZIP C:\MTB30 .(no period, that's the end of this sentence) Say OK, and the Twig key will be inflated into the MTB30 directory. If you've made your backup copies, TWIG.ZIP, PKUNZIP, and their temporary directory can be erased.

(5) The Twig key can be run 3 ways:

a) At the DOS prompt enter: C:\MTB30\TWIG.EXE

b) In Windows, using the FILE menu of the Program Manager, select run. Enter: C:\MTB30\TWIG.EXE in the command window; say OK.

c) In Windows, highlight the Program group where you want the Twig Key program icon to appear, or using the FILE menu of the Program Manager, select NEW, Program Group. Then using the FILE menu of the Program Manager, select NEW, Program Item. Name the program TWIG KEY, the command line is C:\MTB30\TWIG.EXE, the working directory is C:\MTB30. To select an icon (none is packaged with the key), select Change Icon, and pick one. Say OK. The program can now be started by clicking on the icon.

Note: If a message states that start up books will not be available, click OK.
