This photo shows the only food upon which the silk moth caterpillars will feed, mulberry leaves.  This is not unusual, most insect larvae are pretty finicky eaters, feeding solely or nearly so upon a single host plant. 

Rather than turning the caterpillars lose upon the plant, where they would be subject to predators, the leaves are gathered and fed to the growing caterpillars in special baskets.
