Useful Links

The Virtual Fly Lab
A superb simulation of crosses with Drosophila melanogaster.  It is far quicker and easier than the real thing, and also has chi-square capabilities to analyze the progeny of crosses.
Web Companion for Concepts of Genetics by Klug and Cummings
This web site is for the text book for this course and has supplemental material including on-line multiple-choice quizzes and updates about current research and controversial topics

Index to Glosssary of Genetic Terms
A large on-line glossary of genetic terms.

MendelWeb
This web-site has Mendel's paper in German and an annotated English translation.  A good place to brush up on your Mendelian Genetics.

Classic Papers in Genetics (broken link)
Copies of original genetic papers written by Mendel, Morgan, Hardy, etc.

Primer on Molecular Genetics (Department of Energy) (broken link)
Has excellent discussions of subjects like Southern blots, RFLP mapping, DNA sequencing, etc.

Genome Analysis:  A Laboratory Manual (comes up genome database)
A tutorial on what to do after you have cloned a gene (how to search databases, analyze your sequence, etc.

KUMC Genetics Education Center
Kansas University site with links to many other educational sites.

For Current Events and News, see:

ScienceDaily Magazine
Has current science news

InScight:  A current news site produced by Academic Press and Science magazine

Discover (broken link):   Discover magazine, has lots of popular stories about biology and genetics
Science's Next Wave (broken link):   Career information for young scientist - want to know what's happening in the science job market? Produced byScience magazine.

News in Bioscience and Medicine:  News about molecular genetics, in particular what's happening online (new web sites, newsgroups, new services, etc.)

Reviews of hot topics in Biology (CSA):   Abstracts and reviews of "hot" areas in biology from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts

Pages with links to lots of interesting sites

Genetics (VL):   Virtual Library page on genetics. Has links to all of the different organism databases (look here for dog, cat, tree, etc. databases).

CSUBIOWEB - GENETICS/MOLECULAR BIOLOGY:   This site has links to many different genetic sites with descriptions of the sites.

BioChemNet :  Another site with lots of links, including links to Biochemistry sites and other Biolgy sites

Agricultural Genome Information Server (AGIS):  Links to many agricultural sites (wheat genome, cow genome, etc.)

Pedro's BioMolecular Research Tools - Part 1:  A collection of links to all of the sites that will help you analyse a DNA or protein sequence. Do you want to search for intron exon boundaries in a genomic sequence? Check for a transmembrane domain in your gene?  Compare your gene to other genes? etc. This is a very large site and may take a little while to load.

On-line Databases

Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM):  This is a searchable database with information about most known human genes and genetic diseases. It includes phenotypes, inheritance (dominant, recessive, etc.), chromosomal location, different alleles, information about the gene (if it has been cloned), and a bibliography.

Search OMIM -- Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man:  NCBI version of OMIM (use this one if the one above is busy)

Mouse gene database (also OMIM):   This includes mouse genes along with OMIM and can also be used to search for information about human genes.

FlyBase:  This is a searchable database with information about most known Drosophila genes. It  includes phenotypes, inheritance (dominant, recessive, etc.), chromosomal location, different alleles, information about the gene (if it has been cloned), and a bibliography.

Entrez:  This is a searchable database of jornal articles about cloned genes. You get the citation of the article and links to the DNA and protein sequences. It will also search for related              papers based on DNA sequence similarity (e.g., itcan find a paper about a similar gene              even if the authors were unaware of the similarity).

Search Genbank:  This is a searchable database of all known DNA sequences. If you know the name of the gene you can search this database for the DNA sequence.

BLAST Database Searches at NCBI:  If you have a DNA or protein sequence you can search the entire genbank database for any similar sequences.

GenLink: A human genetics resource:  More human chromosome maps with locations of all mapped genes.

Transgenic Mouse Database:  A database with information about all of the different genetically altered mouse strains.
