We have demonstrated that reperfusion deficits still exist after the disappearance of clots in the large artery. Further studies revealed that distal movement of the original clot in the MCA plays a significant role in the occlusion of downstream microvessels. We have also found that hyperthermia exacerbates the reperfusion deficits in the ischemic injured brain. Presently, we are examining how temperature changes affect the microvascular perfusion and the molecular mechanisms underlying the microvascular occlusion during ischemic brain injury.
